Stand Tall
I went to Maryanne for rehabilitation on a recent ACL/meniscus surgery. The
results came in when I went to my surgeon. He gave me A+s on everything.
My knee recovery was coming along at a fantastic rate. Once I was off of
crutches, I started getting the commentary; I could feel it too. I was walking more upright and with better weight distribution on my legs. For years I had been walking like a primate that had not yet learned to walk upright; my
shoulders were rolled, and in a slight slouch. It is common among tall people
to do what they can to "fit in", so we roll the shoulders and try to make
ourselves smaller. Maryanne helped me realize that my height should not be
the reason for poor posture. She started using Pilates for my knee, body and
life. The results have been very positive. Thanks MA!!

Belly Dance with Chris Chambers
Over the past four years, belly dancing has become one of the most fulfilling aspects of my life in Silverton. Tribal belly dance changes the way I move, transcending and helping to overcome the kyphosis and scoliosis which are part of my physique. A veteran of major abdominal surgery, I’ve felt dramatic improvement in my posture and fluidity through the awakening of muscles used for virtually nothing but this unique form of dance. The atmosphere of acceptance and encouragement which
Chris Chambers brings to her teaching makes belly dance class a place for all
women in Silverton, from girls to senior citizens, people of all body types and levels of experience in dance. Chris’s gentle instruction and phenomenal gift for dance inspire her students; her kindness fosters friendship, self-acceptance, appreciation for differences and intense joy in being together.

Pilates Changed My Life
In the almost three years that I have been receiving private pilates lessons at Silverton Movement Center, I have noticed an enormous improvement in many physical areas- flexibility, posture,
strength, alignment. The most wonderful change is that I have become much more aware of my physicality, and feel comfortable in my body for the first time since I was a child. I am soon turning 62, and I feel younger than I have in decades. Maryanne has a true calling; she individualizes each session so that pilates is always rewarding and enjoyable.

They say that getting old isn’t easy. They say that 60 is the new 50. I’m 66.
A little over a year ago I began exercise classes at the Silverton Movement Center. My wife had been taking Pilates there and seemed much the better for it. She encouraged me to try Pilates
classes. In spite of my usual old man resistance I decided to give it a try. She was right and I am better for it. Participating in Pilates, spinning, kettlebells and a little gem called “the workout”- while they’re not easy- I am beginning to think that 66 is the new 50.
I highly recommend the Silverton Movement Center. The instruction, the support and the camaraderie is priceless. If you think you are too old for exercise classes or it just isn’t for you, think again. I did. And now I feel as good as I did at 50.

Before

After
You gotta go IN to get OUT
I have been an outdoor enthusiast for all of my life, spending as much time possible skiing or mountain biking in the San Juan Mountains. I never thought to step foot in a gym or considered “working out” indoors. That is until The Silverton Movement Center opened it’s doors and I met Maryanne. We became fast friends and she convinced me to come try a Pilates class. Although I was cardiovascularly fit, Pilates kicked my ass! I started to notice changes in my
body and my performance outdoors. Then came the beloved Kettlebells and things have never been better. Kettlebells not only made me feel stronger than ever, with more endurance, but they actually made the most physical change in my body. In early 2009 I began training for The RKC with Maryanne and this October passed and became a Certified Teacher.

A long journey
I was an active young adult, then a series of surgeries and physical setbacks changed all of that. I became a chubby complacent teen. In my early twenties I began to get back to my roots and began hiking, running and enjoying the outdoors again. Moving to Colorado brought even more of this back into my life. I thought I was fit until a friend, who was a personal trainer, told me I wasn’t really fit, just cardivascularly strong. Thus began my journey into “real” fitness. I began weight training and dabbled in Pilates, lost weight and had more energy. My eyes opened to a
whole new idea of health and fitness. In 2001 I gave birth (at home) to an amazing little 9 lb boy. The trials of labor bulged several disc in my back. I was in severe pain for a whole year. When
“surgery” was recommended by a doctor I came back to Pilates and within 3 months my back was healed and I was enrolled in a teacher training program. Pilates laid the foundations for my
explorations in functional fitness, everything I learned and continue to learn has a connection to Pilates training and I am forever grateful for the outstanding teachers I have had. Next, Enter The Kettlebell. Kettlebell training has taken my fitness to a level I did not think possible. I feel great all of the time, my body has changed once again and every single other activity I participate in
from mtn biking to chopping wood to folding laundry has improved. It is simply the most powerful fitness tool I have ever encountered. The journey continues every day.
